new glasses!
this is a spring tradition of ours that we look forward to each year.
purchasing the glasses was an easy task. photographing them was a little more difficult (but oh, so hilarious)!
happy, happy friday, everyone!

city slickers (1991).
billy crystal brings big laughs and heartfelt moments to this early 90’s western comedy.
city slickers is about mitch (crystal), and his two best friends phil (daniel stern) and ed (bruno kirby), who are each going through their own mid-life crises. they decide to drive some excitement into their lives by taking a holiday that involves driving a herd of cattle from new mexico to colorado. the trio end up learning valuable life lessons and decide to make changes to better themselves. predictable, i know, but the adventure along the way is way too good to pass on this film.
city slickers has great scenery from the rolling hills to the babbling brooks and the cast does not let you down. crystal is comedic dynamite and definitely proves his chops, always delivering a perfectly smooth rhythm of long drawn out jokes and snappy one liners. his partners in spurs are always entertaining and the film moves along at a great pace with no dull moments.
curly (the tough-as-nails trail boss portrayed by jack palance) is the thought-provoking back bone to the film to which everyone is afraid of or looks up to. palance won an oscar for his role and demonstrates why (he is the man).
if you like comedies and westerns go watch this film, you won’t be disappointed. it is a great take on the otherwise over-digested genre and it will have you laughing in your cowboy boots.
diy number fifteen.
airplane (purchased from michael’s) + chain + hook.
what this equals is an easy, diy project that adds a whimsical touch to any room.
of course, you can hang whatever best suits you. this particular room of ours has a nomadic/travel theme, so our choice of a wooden airplane is working wonders.
next, we will hang a little birdhouse in our woodsy-themed spare bedroom.
so be creative and make sure to have fun with this project!
red velvet mini cakes.
making mini cakes from packages of cake mix is one of my favorite baking tricks.
you will need:
1 package of cake mix
1/2 c vegetable oil
2 eggs
icing
sprinkles (optional)
what you have to do is purchase pre-made mix and rather than turning it into cake or muffins, turn it into cookies. they will come out flat and tender, sort of the consistency of pancakes. from there, let the cookies cool, then pair them up and fill each one with icing.
for an extra treat, add icing and sprinkles to the top of each mini cake as well.
they turn out to be so imperfect, but perfectly cute, sweet, and delicious!
book review number two.
blackwood farm by anne rice.
for those of you who are fans of anne rice, you might find blackwood farm to be hit or miss.
what i really enjoyed about this novel is that rice combined both the vampire chronicles with lives of the mayfair witches to formulate a story around a new family by the name of blackwood.
tarquin blackwood is the protagonist in blackwood farm. in the beginning of the novel, we find him in a desperate state where he is seeking out the infamous lestat to either enlist his help or to be put to death by him. lestat agrees to listen to tarquin’s tale before he makes his decision.
now comes the miss part (even though i really enjoyed this aspect). aside from the brief beginning and short intervals throughout the book, this novel is based completely on memory. it is solely a story that is being recounted by tarquin to lestat.
in true rice form, the ancestry of the blackwood family is explained in great detail. the deceased family members always seem to possess much influence over the characters in her books, and as a seer of spirits, tarquin repeatedly interacts with these ghosts to the point where they put his life in danger.
so if you are wanting something a little different by rice, blackwood farm is definitely a must read. although it was published in 2002, i am still as excited about it as if it were a new novel.
i am currently and impatiently waiting to read her follow-up, and consequently last novel of the vampire chronicles, blood canticle.
